| What is ISS? |
In-school suspension (ISS) at Burton High School is a disciplinary technique designed to assist problem students with their behavior while still ensuring that they participate in the academic community in some way. When a student is placed into in-school suspension (ISS), he or she is removed from the traditional classroom environment and put into a special suspension classroom, led by a certified teacher. The suspension can last from one day to several days, depending on the student's offense, and the student may be warned that future offenses could result in additional suspension time in ISS or even expulsion from Burton High School. For the length of the suspension, the student reports for classes in the suspension room, and he or she is expected to complete all homework assignments and classroom assignments, work on projects, or engage in any other activity which the normal classroom teacher deems appropriate. The students are also counseled and required to complete a behavior packet that deals with various topics such as decision making, goal setting, or character education in which they reflect back on their decision. ISS is structured and designed so that the students do not desire a second visit. |

ISS Procedures |
PARENT NOTIFICATION
When a student is assigned to ISS he/she will receive a Parent Notification Sheet showing the dates the student is assigned to ISS. The student is responsible for taking home the Parent Noticiation Sheet, having the parents sign it, and returning the Parent Notification Sheet to the ISS supervisor on the first day they are assigned to ISS. This sheet must be signed by both the student and the parent BEFORE they will be released from ISS.
ISS ASSIGNMENT SHEET
Once a student is assigned to ISS, an assignment sheet is given to EACH teacher showing the dates the student is assigned to ISS. Teachers write ALL asignments the student will be responsible for while in ISS in this sheet. Teachers need to return this sheet to the principal's office when completed. This sheet should be attached to the assignment and will be returned to the teacher when the assignment is completed.
All assignments from classroom teachers must be successfully and satisfactorily completed. Failure to complete all assignments will result in another day of ISS.
It is the ISS supervisor's responsibility to return all completed assignments. Completed assignments will be returned to the teacher's mail box at the end of EACH day.
ISS RELEASE FORM
Once a student has successfully completed ISS, a Classroom RE-entry Sheet will be given to the student by the ISS supervisor. The student is responsible for taking this RE-Entry Sheet to EACH of his/her classes, giving it to the instructor of the class to sign. The teacher should take the form from the student at the beginning of class and return it to the student at the end of class. The LAST PERIOD TEACHER should sign the form and turn it into the principal office. Teachers please do not let the student in class until you have the RELEASE FORM and it is properly filled in. If any information is missing from the form, send the student to the office. ANY UNSATISFACTORY CHECK WILL RESULT IN ANOTHER DAY OF ISS. |
